What is Annual Shradh Ceremony?

Shradh (also spelled Shraddha) is a sacred Hindu ritual performed to honor and offer peace to the souls of departed ancestors (Pitru). The Annual Shradh is performed on the death anniversary (tithi) of the deceased, as well as during the Pitru Paksha — the 16-day lunar period dedicated to ancestor worship.

The word "Shradh" comes from "Shraddha" meaning faith and devotion. It is believed that performing Shradh with sincerity ensures that the souls of ancestors receive nourishment, attain peace, and bless the living family members with health, prosperity, and happiness.

At Prey Pandit, our experienced pandits perform the complete Shradh Karma — including Pind Daan, Tarpan, and Brahmin Bhojan — with full Vedic procedures and compassion.

How is Annual Shradh Performed?

Our pandits follow the complete Shradh Karma Vidhi as prescribed in the Garuda Purana and Dharmashastra:

1
Sankalp The pandit takes a formal Sankalp in the name of the deceased, mentioning their name, gotra, and the tithi of their passing.
2
Tarpan (Water Offering) Water mixed with black sesame seeds and kusha grass is offered to the ancestors while chanting their names and Pitru mantras.
3
Pind Daan Rice or barley flour balls (Pind) are prepared and offered to the ancestors. Each Pind represents a generation of ancestors.
4
Vishwedeva Puja The Vishwedeva deities are worshipped as witnesses to the Shradh ritual, ensuring the offerings reach the ancestors.
5
Brahmin Bhojan (Feeding Brahmins) Brahmins are invited and fed a complete meal as representatives of the ancestors. This is considered the most important part of Shradh.
6
Cow, Crow & Dog Feeding Food is offered to a cow, crow, and dog — as these animals are believed to carry the offerings to the ancestors in the afterlife.
7
Dakshina & Conclusion The pandit is offered Dakshina (honorarium) and the ceremony concludes with prayers for the peace and liberation of the ancestors.
